Employee Ratio

If one were to be at an all-girl school they would assume that the faculty would be predominately female. This is the case at the Georgia Institute of Technology the faculty is predominately male just like the student population. School chairs and department heads are 63% percent male. I am curious if this is because leadership positions are generally held by males or because since it is a larger male population at the school they are keeping the ratio intact. According to the chart in the right the most tenured female professors in in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. The most female positions are held in the humanities fields. However there are still held by three-quarters males. Interesting enough of the 3 professors and one TA that I have this semester at tech is a 3:1 ratio favoring females. My male professor is for a Management:IT class. This fits the mold because more males teach quantitative classes. For all of the Colleges none of percentages of tenured female faculty exceed the minority female student population.
In figure 17 you can see the indirect relationship between the rank of professors and the percentage of females in the positions. The only sector where women exceed the amount of men is instructors. In the full professors the amount of females is less than 5%. This causes speculation. Is there any particular reason for this large difference. Does the full-time interfere with the women's life style as a mother or homemaker? This causes me to believe that we still live in an age where there is discrimination. It may not be outright and cruel but it is apparent. This study was also
conducted almost 15 years ago so there is a definite chance that things have changed. It would interest me to find out what the current standings. Hopefully they will have improved and females are more properly represented in the faculty at Georgia Tech however.

Reverse Discrimination: TBS

The Webster definition of reverse discrimination is the discrimination of white males. In this case it is the discrimination of females because females are the minority at Georgia Tech. The state didn't officially authorize women until 1920 and the Institution was founded in 1888. Every year the ratio increases and the freshman class of 2010 has the highest ratio of 36%. According to the Georgia Tech admission formula, Tech values the math portion higher than the verbal portion. Generally males do better at the math portion than females. By this trend obviously more males will be admitted into Georgia Tech. Considering the good value of the instate tuition and the prestige of the Institution of course that larger portion of males that were accepted will attend which is a large part of the reason for the ratio. But in 1996 and 1997 the acceptance rates of women were higher than the acceptance rates for men, in almost every smaller school as well (Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, College of Computing..etc). I believe because of the steep ratio that Georgia Tech wants more women to attend to the school so it does not become such a large difference in male: female population.
There is certain lingo that many Tech students use. One term specific to the ratio of females to males is "Tech Bitch Syndrome" otherwise known as "TBS." This results from the small amount of females. Therefore guys are attracted to the same girls, when these girls receive a lot of attention from guys they think that all guys like them (even outside of tech). This is common for many Tech schools but it is labeled specifically at Georgia Tech. So when the admissions board keeps admitting more and more females this syndrome will have an indirect relationship.
With the limited number of females at the school, there are a lot of social results from that. According to collegeprowler.com which is a website that gives the basic information on a college or university based on the opinions of the students and professional opinions.
According to the male rankings they are viewed as being better looking than females and they are more friendly. The only category that the females have a significant larger bar is the "stuck-up" category. This enforces the "TBS" syndrome.
